For some reason, I'm assuming becasue there was no internet connection but I'm not sure, the update didn't go successfully, instead the laptop had frozen at the 'Preparing to Configure' screen for hours on end. I restarted the laptop via the power button, but it kept going back to that screen page. I tried again at home where there is an internet connection, and suddenly the screen says the update wasn't successful and that it was 'reverting the changes', after which the laptop restarted itself.
This happened this morning, and ever since the restart the laptop is frozen on the 'Please Wait' screen. It has been like this for a good 8 hours now, and I'm at a loss as to what to do.
I can't get to the Start Screen at all. Please, is there some way to system restore from boot up? This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
I have the same question Check the graphics drivers, mine weren't up to date. Use drop box to backup up your files not Sky drive, it's not stable. If you want the store features then you'll have to battle with the live account for now.
I found out that if you turn off your computer by the power button, it works the next session. Although it is not a full fix, this should allow you to get on your Window 8.
Thanks for this update Chris. After very nearly returning this 5 day old machine to Dell, I too seem to have cracked it by rolling back to the initial system restore, and setting up the machine from scratch again but this time diligently avoiding anything to do with OneDrive was SkyDrive. I am using the Local Accounts too. This bad "restoreoptin" experience has cost me a lost day of work, and has left me very wary of Windows 8 and completely convinced I want nothing to do with Microsoft's OneDrive and Cloud services.
If you have Windows 7 working for you, don't choose to go to Windows 8 lightly. Nightmare, and as you say well known and still unfixed. Just search for "Windows 8 restoreoptin" and see all the current posts. My problem is somewhat similar. Then a blue screen stating that windows did not load correctly, there are 2 options, 1 click yo display available options. I have tried the use the diagnostic function provided and it fails. The odd thing about this is that by simply restarting my pc windows 8.
I was thinking about falling back to window 8, but if that involves re-installing windows 8 I don't even want to go there!. Microsoft has got to get it's act together and do more in diagnosing and fixing problems. It's unacceptable when users run the windows 8 diagnostic tool and the diagnostic tool fails to fix the problem or at least identify what is causing the problem!. My symptoms include a couple of my junior users get basically a blue screen active logging off that never goes away and prevents anything else - requires a cold boot.
I looked at my MSN profile and changed my updates to notification instead automatic. I did find any sync options there to change. So after rolling back are you suggesting not to in incorporate the from SkyDive to One Drive if visible? I restarted, and this "please wait" screen gave me a new option to manage my SkyDrive account, or skip altogether. I skipped it, and everything was gone :. Thanks for all this info, I too have a Inspiron 15 which failed miserably after 3 weeks, unfortunately without a restore point.
I restored it to factory settings and used it in Windows 8 for months. Hello Daniel, Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. Can you please confirm whether you installed the Windows updates and got into this issue? Have you installed any third party anti-virus program in the computer?
Do you have a Windows 8. I suggest you to follow the below methods to see if it helps, Method 1: Safe Mode with Networking. Click the power icon displayed at the bottom right. Click Advanced options and choose Startup Settings. Click Restart. Choose the user account that has administrative rights.
Method 2: Clean Boot : To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.
Method 3: System File Checker. What information appears in event logs Event Viewer? That's why it tells you "don't power off your computer while windows is updating Be glad the hardware is all still functional. In the time you spent trying the above steps, you could have pulled the drive, backed up the data, reinstalled and wiped the drive, and reinstalled windows, all software, and restored backups.
I realize that I could have done a backup and wiped the drive. I did not want to do that since the client had spent a lot of time training his voice recognition software. Well, "reality" and the "wants of a residential customer" are often mutually exclusive. You can "want" there to be a magical, miracle fix, but there simply is not. You can tell him you are happy to spend as much time as he is willing to pay for trying to fix his mistake, or he can pay a nominal fee, you will try a repair install and if that does not work you will do a clean install and he can start from scratch.
Some days a fresh reinstall really is the fastest and most sensible way. Can't you put the drive in another computer, grab his VR software's data file, reinstall the app then copy over his training data? This is there for a reason
